Warning: Avoiding Utility Disconnection Phone Scams

Loudoun County homeowners and business owners are frequently targeted by sophisticated utility impostor scams. Scammers call claiming your gas will be shut off within 30 to 45 minutes unless you make an immediate payment via Zelle, Venmo, prepaid debit cards (Green Dot, Vanilla), or Bitcoin.

Washington Gas will NEVER demand immediate payment via prepaid gift cards, cryptocurrency, or peer-to-peer payment apps. If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and check your balance directly on your official online account.

High Gas Bill Investigations: Weather vs. Hidden Leaks

An unexplained doubling or tripling of your monthly natural gas therms during mild weather is a major red flag. While winter heating degree days typically cause seasonal increases, sudden spikes during spring or summer often indicate:

  • A buried underground leak on a private pool heater or generator lateral
  • A malfunctioning tankless water heater firing continuously due to stuck flow sensors
  • A continuous weep on a crawlspace manifold fitting

How to Perform a DIY Meter Dial Creep Test

If you suspect an uncontained gas leak is driving up your utility bill, you can perform a simple dial creep check:

  1. Turn off all gas appliances inside the home: shut off the gas range, make sure the water heater is not actively heating, and set your thermostat so the furnace does not fire.
  2. Walk outside to your gas meter and locate the smallest dial on the meter face (typically the 1/2 cubic foot or 2 cubic foot test dial).
  3. Mark the exact pointer position with a pencil or take a clear smartphone photo.
  4. Wait 20 to 30 minutes without using any gas in the home.
  5. Re-check the dial. If the test dial has moved even a fraction of an inch, gas is actively escaping somewhere on your customer piping.

Did Your Gas Meter Dial Move During the Test? You have an active customer piping leak. Call Ashburn Gas Response at (703) 312-2655 for emergency electronic sniffer isolation.
